University employees enjoy paid family leave

Under the universities’ collective agreement, the employer pays salary during family leave

The birth of a child is a huge change in every family. The law secures for parents the right to stay at home caring for a child without the fear of losing their jobs. Parents are also monetarily compensated during family leave. Under the universities’ collective agreement, the employer pays salary during family leave.

A pregnant employee is paid salary for 40 working days from the start of the pregnancy allowance period. If the parent is entitled to parental allowance, salary is paid for the first 32 working days of parental leave. To be entitled to paid pregnancy and parental allowance, you must have been working for your employer for at least three months, without a break, immediately before the start of pregnancy or parental leave. Adoptive parents also have the right to paid family leave.

The rules above apply to employees governed by the family leave amendments to the Health Insurance Act in force from 1 August 2022. If the employee is governed by the family leave regulations in the Act in force on or before 31 July 2022, the workplace-specific family leave regulations in force in the employment contract on 31 July 2022 apply.

Temporary care leave means parents have the right to stay at home caring (or arranging care) for a sick child under the age of 10. Under the collective agreement, an employee is entitled to four days’ pay while taking temporary care leave.

As of 1 August 2022, people caring for their relatives will be entitled to five days’ leave per calendar year. Relatives’ care leave is unpaid.
